Just for the hill of it

It looks like more of my posts are about the workouts than anything else lately. hmmm.... I think the afternoon swim is out today. Enough damage done. Sometime I've got to remind myself not to push so hard. Or not. It's more fun that way, right? I rode down to Fort Belvoir this morning. I had a few lessons learned from today:
  • I need to bring more food with me next time.
  • There's a perverse side of me that likes hills, and charging up them.
  • I'm not competitive.
  • When I say that I'm not being honest.
  • Couches are powerful early in the morning. Sometimes more powerful than legs.
  • There's a fine line between not enough breakfast, too much to drink, too hot, and too much food for what's going on.
  • I learned that I can keep riding while all that water goes down the wrong airpipe, creating an instant fountain of water across the front of the bike. Good thing there weren't innocent bystanders around.
  • While I prefer riding on the street I should limit that kind of activity to before the wall.
  • Walls occur faster in the heat.
  • I still can't decide who won, the wall, the heart, or the legs.
Well, it was fun anyway. Now it's time to run all the rest of those errands and things to do that pile up on the weekend. Something tells me I'm not finished racing around today.

  1. Are you training for a triathlon? When did your sudden interest in swimming start?

BTW, the owner of Joe's Pool Hall liked the title of your blog... :)

  2. The quick answer to that question is no. I've actually wanted to do one though for a long time and all that's holding me back is my swimming. I sink. and I don't like deep water. (direct corrolation to excuse #1) Plus I haven't figured out how to breath without drinking. So this is me sticking it to the man, which in this case is me. Guess I'm just facing it down and getting it done! Eventually a tri is on the plan - as is a full marathon. But not together. Definitely not together. I actually thought about doing an impromptu tri today, and just scaling it down from the ironman proportionately. But that would have meant a 9 mile run and swimming 10x farther than I can right now. Due to excuse #1, I deemed that to be a bad idea. So there you have it.

Plus, this will let me run longer in life without so much pounding. And it gives me a pretty good total body workout. Also good. And I like a challenge, so I keep going back. I must be sick.

Oh, tell Joe thanks. He's one hall of a guy!

  3. Good for you, David! Way to tackle the challenge head on! You are such a great example to me (in so many ways)...

...and what makes you so sure that "Joe" is a guy??

  4. Triathlon! Triathlon! I'll train you, and it'll be good training because I hate the swimming part most too! And there is actually an even MORE scaled-back version you can do that only involves running a 5K, biking 20K, and swimming about 1500 meters. Or maybe it was even less than 1500. Anyway, yeah.

Haha, when I read "I'm not competitive," I thought, "Liar." Glad to see the follow-up bullet.

I love that I could actually visualize the entire process of you hitting a wall through your lessons learned.

  7. Oh let's see.... I'll have to check my schedule... but I think I can pick her up. I was going to organize my socks that day, but I suppose I can make it.... as long as it's not too far away.... (As if Rochester was in the neighborhood!)

  8. Yeah, if you're too busy, it's cool. I can just walk home or whatever.

  9. Walking is over-rated. I suggest running down a dream...Mom

  10. I agree that walking is over-rated. I need to ensure that you get all the way home safely! I'll use my car and not my bike. I hear you have a suitcase. (since I'm commenting on this post, it seemed like a relevant topic.)

  11. Meh, we could load it on the back of your bike. People around here do it every day. Not like it's hard.
